Have you walked into a shopping mall and saw a big sign that read 50% off? Well, this means that there is a discount on that item. Today, we are going to learn about the percentage discount.
A discount is an amount that is deducted or taken away from the original price. So, if you have a discount this means that you are going to pay less than the original price.
As a math genius, you should be able to calculate a percentage discount and know the new price you will pay.
Example 1:

A shirt is on sale for 40% off. If the original price was ₦40, what is the new sales price?
Step 1: Find the percentage of the amount mentioned.
What is 40% of ₦40?
40_ x ₦40 = ₦16
100 1
Step 2: Deduct the discount amount from the original price.
₦40 – ₦16 = ₦24
The new sales price is ₦24
Example 2:

A woman wants to buy a bag that costs ₦200 that is on sale with a 50% discount. What is the new amount she will be paying?
Step 1: Find the percentage of the amount mentioned.
What is 50% of ₦40?
50_ x ₦200 = ₦100
100 1
Step 2: Deduct the discount amount from the original price.
₦200 – ₦100 = ₦100
The new price of the bag is ₦100
Can you try to solve this problem on your own?
