For many African and diaspora families in the UK, the 11+ exam represents more than a school entrance test. It’s a stepping stone toward opportunity, prestige, and long-term academic success.

But if you’re new to the UK education system, 11+ Exam Preparation can feel overwhelming. What does it test? When should your child begin? And how do you support them if you’re juggling work, parenting, and adjusting to a new environment?

This guide is your starting point.

What Is the 11+ Exam?

The 11+ is an entrance exam taken by Year 6 pupils in England and Northern Ireland for admission into grammar schools and some independent schools. The name “11+” refers to the age of the student at the time of the test (11 years old).

Depending on your local authority or the school you’re applying to, your child may be tested in the following:

  • English (Comprehension, Vocabulary, and SPaG)
  • Mathematics
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning

There are two main exam boards:

  • GL Assessment: More common in most grammar schools.
  • CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring): Designed to be tutor-resistant but phased out in some areas.

When Is the 11+ Exam Held?

Most 11+ exams are held in early September of Year 6. That means preparation should begin no later than the end of Year 4 or the beginning of Year 5. If you’re just getting started in Year 6, all is not lost — but structured, focused tutoring is essential.

Why 11+ Exam Preparation Looks Different for Diaspora Families

Many African and diaspora families bring strong academic expectations and discipline into their parenting. But the UK curriculum may feel unfamiliar, and access to targeted resources can be limited.

Some unique challenges diaspora families face include:

  • Cultural differences in exam prep expectations
  • Busy work schedules that limit availability for homework or practice tests
  • Underestimating the complexity of 11+ exam styles

That’s why it’s important to:

  • Understand the specific format your target school uses
  • Create a structured preparation timeline
  • Get expert tutoring that builds confidence without pressure
