Your child brings home their homework and asks you to help them with it. What they don’t realize is you’ve spent the last decade (and maybe more) doing multiple money-making things that have nothing to do with calculus, photosynthesis, Newton’s law of motion, or some other school topic.

It can sometimes be a huge struggle to help your kids with their assignments, plus these children do so many subjects in school right? Unless you are very sound academically, as a parent, there is no guarantee that you will have knowledge of all of these subjects. It is sort of embarrassing to parents when their kids bring homework to them and they cannot help out.

These days, kids are doing totally different things in school that might be alien to the times of their parents. So, as a parent, how will you solve this problem in a way that won’t make you appear clueless in front of your children?

This post will explain some strategies to take when you cannot help your child with homework.

Strategies to follow when you cannot help your child with homework

Your child brings home an assignment and you cannot solve it? This does not have to keep happening. Below are some tips to follow to assist your child in doing their homework without any hassle.

  • Acceptance
If your child needs your help with homework that seems strange, there is no reason to be angry or defensive. We are not superhumans, and so we do not know it all. Be calm and go through it again. But if you still find it difficult, admit it to your child. Let them know it is perfectly okay not to be able to solve everything. Children are smart and if you get angry or raise your voice, they will only learn how to react to difficult situations from you. If you handle it in an appropriate manner, they will know it is okay to stay calm and positive, even under stress until you can figure it out.
  • Get involved with the Teacher
Always have the contact of your kid’s teacher in case of a situation like this. Now, you can reach out to the teacher and let him/her know what you are struggling with. There is no reason to be ashamed of asking for help. The teacher might even be impressed that you are active in the academic life of your kid.
  • Research
Let’s say you cannot get hold of your kid’s teacher, the next thing to do is look for an alternative. There are so many options available to you, as a parent. The first one is to look for resources online, search for similar questions online or watch engaging videos about that particular problem. The internet has so much information that you can access from the comfort of your home. If you do not want to use the internet, you can go to your local library (although this is a little bit old school, albeit, libraries still exist). Choose a book on that particular subject and dive in. You can take your kid with you so that they know what to do next time if you are not present.
  • Get Help
This is the last resort for parents who find it difficult to help their children solve homework. You can also opt for this if you are mostly unavailable to help your kid with their assignment. It is a very helpful and effective strategy. Tutors are professionals and would not have problems teaching your children the necessary things they should know. You can either opt for an in-person tutor or an online tutor if you are not comfortable with leaving your kid with a stranger. They are myriad digital learning platforms that offer online tutoring at very affordable prices. A typical example is Gradely which offers just-in-time tutors for your child in any subject they might be struggling with.

If your child is having a hard time accepting tutors, talk to him/her. Let them know it is not a thing to be ashamed of. A tutor will make homework better and even explain it in a more effective way.

By following these simple strategies, your kids can look forward to your support as a parent when they have a project they are struggling with, and you won’t have to beat yourself up about it.
