One of the greatest joys of parenting is knowing that your child is excelling academically. In fact, it is a huge ego booster for most parents if not all. It is impossible for your child to excel in academics without the efforts and support of educators. However, their efforts will not be enough without some sort of input from parents or guardians.
Children are meant to perform different tasks and meaningful activities in school. They need to acquire knowledge, develop independent positive habits, and also practice skills that will be useful in their journey to adulthood.
So, we carried out online surveys and spoke with local teachers and professionals in the industry, and came up with top 5 things your child’s teacher might want you to know that’ll help to improve your child’s chances of academic success.
1. Balance screen time with study time
There is no doubt that the internet is a good source of information but teachers are worried about the amount of time spent by students on computers. This does not mean they want you to remove their screen time entirely, but to strike a balance when it comes to study and fun. Check out our recent blog post on the 3 amazing tips to help your kids balance study and play.
2. Fuel your child’s confidence
Some of your kids have low self-esteem in class. They shy away from asking questions or performing oral presentations in front of their peers. Most teachers are worried that parents do not let their kids express themselves at home. When you constantly shut them up or overlook their ideas, they might find it difficult to communicate in class. They get so conscious of looking foolish in front of their teachers or classmates. It might be tiring listening to their silly questions. But it is all part of being a child. Encourage and respect their little efforts.
3. Homework is for your child not you
It is a very common thing among parents to do their children’s homework for them. The reason for this might be because you as a parent tend to get impatient with your child’s speed. You can support and show your children how to go about the assignment, but do not do it for them. When you are the one doing it, teachers would not be able to determine that child’s abilities. Your child will learn how to be responsible for their works if you let them do the ones assigned to them. Helping them to do it will only build a lazy character.
4. Your child needs balanced diet
What a child eats is very important for them to maximize their full learning potential. A bad diet will definitely affect your child’s performance in class. Teachers want parents to feed their children a healthy breakfast and pack their lunchboxes with nourishing and healthy snacks. The nutrition in your children’s food must be high to help them grow healthy and assist in the development of their learning capacity. A child’s diet is very crucial to their development.
5. Don’t take away relaxation and care
Don’t underestimate the saying “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. Children are not adults so they need to sleep for at least 11 to 12 hours depending on their ages. A child needs to be well-rested before school and even when they leave school. Let them have peaceful times in the afternoon and evenings so that they will be able to assimilate knowledge easily. A tired child cannot learn anything and he/she might even be forgetful. You can help this situation by creating a healthy relaxation schedule for them.
Moreso, children tend to know if they are loved or not. Do not show preferential treatments between your children. Never let any of them feel unloved or unwanted. Treat them all equally. You can show them care by reading a bed night story or kiss them on the cheek. Happy children find it easy to learn and perform excellently in class.
Just before you go…
We know you want to have an active and happy child. Remember that what your children go through at home has a great deal to do with their academic performance. You need to work hand-in-hand with your child’s educator. So, the next time you go to pick your child up from school don’t hesitate to have a little chat with the class teacher. You’d be surprised how much you’d learn about your child, and of course the numerous ways you and the teacher can work together to help your child succeed in school and life.
