We live in a beautiful world where everything around us has unique characteristics. We’re able to identify things by simply describing their features such as colours, size, or shape.
A collective word used to describe people, places, and things is called an adjective.
Today we’re going to be learning about adjectives. At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
- Define adjectives
- Identify the types of adjectives and their features
What is an Adjective?
An adjective is a word that describes, qualifies, modifies, or tells us more about a noun or pronoun. Adjectives are very important in grammar as they make stories and articles about things and people more interesting and engaging.
Types of adjectives
- Descriptive adjectives
- Adjectives of distribution
- Demonstrative adjectives
- Interrogative adjectives
- Possessive adjectives
Adjectives perform different functions and today we’re going to explore the descriptive functions of adjectives.
Descriptive adjectives
Descriptive adjectives are words that give us so much information about a noun or pronoun such its:
- Size
- Colour
- Appearance
- Length
- Height
- Weight
- Quantity
- State
- Quality
- Origin
And many more.
Example:
1. I met a young woman yesterday.
Young is an example of a descriptive adjective, it tells us the age of the woman.
Let’s look at another example:
2. My dad bought a German car.
German is an example of a descriptive adjective, it tells us the origin, that’s where the car is from.
Let’s do a quick task together
Can you identify the descriptive adjectives in the sentences below?
1. The well-dressed man stepped into the elevator.
2. The bird flapped its strong wings.
Good job, well-dressed is the descriptive adjective in the first sentence because it describes the appearance of the man.
While strong is the descriptive adjective in the last sentence because it describes the quality of the bird’s wings.
